Du Bois v. Washington

W.E.B. Dubois
Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Dubois were two black leaders for the last generation of slaves. These two men would argue on which way or idea was best for their kin. DuBois didn't quite understand why Washington thought the best way to gain equality for African Americans was through education. DuBois disagreed strongly and rationalized that equality is in order since all men were created equal. DuBois critized Washington in his book The Souls Of Black Folk; it is one of the most influential books of the twentieth century.

Washington founded the Tuskegee Institute. It was used to educate blacks. Its main focus was training African Americams valuable trade so they could compete in the white society. DuBois was one of the influential leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAAPC). NAAPC was a tool used to try to gain legal and economical equality for African Americans.

  1. Dexterine, this is an excellent brief description of both of their efforts. Note: It's the NAACP, and not the NAAPC.
