The Jewish Welfare Board drft

                                                               Jewish Welfare Board
In an effort to popularize the JWB this posters, published in 1918, along with a few others were posted around the US to commercialize the help and effort being sent to aid the soldiers fighting in World War 1.

The expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 was the beginning of intense migration to the Americas by Jews. Like the many who migrated in that direction, Jews were escaping the clutches of the religion police, that was the king and queen of Spain and any one who was against them. Since then Jews have not been able to settle down. They tried in the Netherlands, the New Dutch colony of Recife in Brazil, The Dutch Caribbean, and many other places. Each time they discovered themselves in a fit of trouble scauntering about looking for a new place to call home. By the 1900s two million eastern European Jews were living in America.

The JWB, Jewish Welfare Board, was created during World War One with the purpose of rallying up rabbis: teachers, for military service. Their work ran along the lines of encouraging soldiers, distributing books, articles, Bibles, and prayer books. Their uniform consisted of olive green/gray coat with gold-colored buttons and a patch on the upper left sleeve. For a woman, matching skirt, gathered at the waist in the rear, closes with snaps. A cloth band reinforces the waist, two patch pockets are on the front. The collar is made of white cotton, with three button holes to permit attachment of the collar to the matching shirt.

In 1921, the JWB took over the duties of Young Mens Hebrew and Kindred Associations immerging the two organization to form a new JWB. The new title was the National Associations of Jewish Community Centers and the Young Mens-Young Womens Hebrew Associations. The association continues to work at the home front and abroad during war time. Now after many years the new title is and still is the USO after six different private organizations-- the Young Men's Christian Association, the Young Women's Christian Association, the National Jewish Welfare Board, the Traveler's Aid Association and the Salvation Army-- came together in 1941 after President Roosevelt ordered them to.

The War to End All Wars.......... So they thought

                                                       Archduke Ferdinand and his family
For many years imperialism had contributed to a countries wealth and power. The ancient Egptians, Roman Empire, and Chinese empire practiced it and succeeded in being great. This practice can be considered a factor of nationalism because pride for one's country can lead to wanting to spread it's territories, believe, and language. Having excessive confidence in any thing especially a piece of land (whether large or small) idea, language, or just believe is absurd. Furthermore, when nationalism has settled in and that nation is being glared at by other minor nations who are looking for advancement, militarism, the believe that a nation or state needs a large military force ready at all times for attack, means war is underway. In the case of World War 1; the war to end all wars, alliances was a key factor to it being so great in contrast but ghastly still. It all went something like this: when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany and the Ottoman Empire jumped into the war siding with Austria-Hungary. Serbia was aided by Russia, France, Britain and 27 nations in total. When Archduke Ferdinand was assinated the batle line was drawn.

The people of America could not stay neutral and allow it's power be ridiculed and underestimated. Citizens were being killed, and telegraphs posing legitimate threat to the Untied States was being used as tools. A British cruiser, the Luisitania, yeilding only 128 Americans, weapons and artillery was drowned. Though the American citizens on the cruiser were but a few they were still Americans. The first offense angered the Americans but the second posed a serious threat. The Zimmerman telegraph on it's way to Mexico beseeching Mexico to enter the war on the side of the Triple Alliance, in return for the southern American states they took made America Join the war before  Germany did any further harm.

The first world war ended when Germany could not fight the Allies on land or by sea. In the treaty of Versailles Germany was forced to accept responsibilty for causing the war. Her military was downsized, she had to pay certain nations on the Allies side restoration money (approximately $31.4 billion dollars back then, now worth about $385 billion). President Woodrew Wilson's 'Fourteen Points' focused on peace settlement. It reprimanded secret dealings among European nations and proposed 'open covenants of peace'. Only 6 of the points were edited in the treaty; 7,8,10,11,13, and 14.

  • Evacuation of German troops from Belgium.
  • Evacuation and restoration by Germany of French territory, with restoration to
  • France of Alsace-Lorraine.
  • Opportunity of autonomous development for the peoples of Austria-Hungary.
  • Evacuation by the Central Powers of Serbia, Montenegro, and Romania; granting of seaports to Serbia; and international guarantees of the political and economic independence and territorial integrity of the Balkan states.
  • An independent Poland with access to the sea.
  • Establishment of a general association of nations to afford mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to large and small nations alike.

The harsh treatment towards Germany did not weaken her permanently, World War 2 was prove to that.

Interpreting Relevent Laws

                                                           The 18th and 21st

The 18th amendment, the Prohibition Act, was enacted in hopes to reduce the intake of alcohol. Alcohol has proven to make fools out of the most sophisticated of persons in the world who part takes in the bitter nectar. The amendment wasn't all too ineffective. It reduced some things here and there, improved others there and here. Eventually because the law was uneven and would not help on improving the economy as the great depression dawn on, it was repealed.

The 21th amendment repealed the National Prohibition Act of 1920; the 18th amendment. Nullifying the prohibition of manufacturing, sale, transport, or export of alcoholic beverages. Though the intake of alcohol
decreased, and organized crimes also reduced, the gallons of alcohol left after the Prohibition was disheartening. It was as though in secret alcohol was being taken in carelessly. Methods to make 'bootleg' liquor was lethal, being either too strong or containing impurities

Prohibition did bring about a sense of anarchy. Alcohol consumption was not in the law so people did basically what they could to consume it. Speakeasies, bootlegging, and gangsters were aided by the law. Well, technically. Since the law didn't mention anything about taking in alcohol, and because gangsters will do anything to make money they supply citizens with booze (aka alcohol). Clubs (speakeasies) take it upon themselves to do the same. Police officers violated many civil rights when searching for possession of alcohol. Soon after a movement began to repeal Prohibition, it was thought as interfering with personal liberty. The 21th amendment is the first and only amendment to repeal another.

Prohibition succeeded because there was less intake of alcohol however it practically destroyed the economy. Police forces broke protective laws that are granted by the Constitution. 21st amendment was created to correct a law (the 18th) that was suppose to help society. These two laws focused on alcohol. They don't go hand in hand like others do, but one repeals and destroys the other. Since Prohibition wasn't quit working for the country the 21st comes in and repeals it.

'A Splendid Little War'

War and Peace
I agree with the excuse that the reason to declare war is to help civilize backwards people. It's a sufficient statement to cover up whatever a nation really intends by declaring war. The claim that the united states was concerned about the way Cubans were being treated by Spain was just a cover up. America just like any other nation inspects the gains and losses a war brings forth. An opportunity was sighted by America and she grasped it disguising her true intentions of conquer by humanitarian concern.

Spanish Era
If I lived in Europe of course I would be convinced that the United States would obtain power if she defeated Spain. Before America it was just Spain and European nations, especially England, who would fight neck and neck for supremacy. Spain and these nations were the power holders back then. Spain was the great leader before America came and beat her old wrinkled era of supremacy. No matter, America was becoming strong and much too powerful for any nations to hold at bay.

Blog Post #2: 3/11/11 Disaster in Japan

Intensity of Earthquake

NORTHEAST JAPAN- On March 11, 2011 at approximately 2:46pm the fifth largest earthquake in the world, with a ground shattering magnitude of 8.9 hit the northeast part of Japan. For more than 2 horrifying minutes that seemed like hours the streets, homes, and buildings shook with such intensity that skyscrapers where crumbling. The earthquake unleashed a tsunami that reached the height of 33 ft. The wall of water swept 250 miles of houses, cars, and debris. Six thousand nine hundred eleven are dead and ten thousand three hundred sixteen people are missing. Japan is gradually getting back on it's feet like all nations do after a calamity of such. With the help of U.S. air carriers and ships Japan will reconstruct and move on. Their motto: 'to do their best and preserve and suppress their own feelings for the sake of the 'group" will come in handy. As for the nuclear power plants, they pose as threats because they refuse to cool. Some of the cooling systems for these plants were damaged during the disaster. Many residents living near a plant were forced to evacuate because of the fear of a massive meltdown. The cooling systems are needed to keep nuclear fuel from unnecessary heating and meltdowns. Meltdowns release poisonous radiations into the atmosphere.

Du Bois v. Washington

W.E.B. Dubois
Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Dubois were two black leaders for the last generation of slaves. These two men would argue on which way or idea was best for their kin. DuBois didn't quite understand why Washington thought the best way to gain equality for African Americans was through education. DuBois disagreed strongly and rationalized that equality is in order since all men were created equal. DuBois critized Washington in his book The Souls Of Black Folk; it is one of the most influential books of the twentieth century.

Washington founded the Tuskegee Institute. It was used to educate blacks. Its main focus was training African Americams valuable trade so they could compete in the white society. DuBois was one of the influential leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAAPC). NAAPC was a tool used to try to gain legal and economical equality for African Americans.
